Tours and projects
The following Trip ...

A guided 14-day tour, for maximal
6 Individualists.

Brief description:
Arrival in Paramaribo in the early evening.
We enjoy for the first time the culinary delights of Suriname, starting with an Indonesian dinner.

In the first two days we go out for an exciting activity and start to discover the capital city and the nearby plantations.

After this familiarization we drive towards the south of Suriname, where we go by boat to Tonka-Island. Here we spend two relaxing days, taking in the rainforest, go swimming, fishing, or just laying in the hammock and laze around.

Afterwards, our adventure takes us deeper in the tropical forest, to the villages of the Saramaccan-People. During our 4 days visit there we go to see people who show us their handcraft skills, listen to local stories, join cultural events, take jungle walks and taste indigenous food.

On our way back we stop in Overbridge, a tourist resort on the Suriname River. Where we will take time to absorb the jungle-impressions experienced days before and find our way back to «civilisation». Then we continue to travel further west, to the district Coronie, the former Coconut plantations.

We then return to Paramaribo where we spend our final day. Souvenir-shopping or just to enjoy a nice drink in a street café will be our main activity. At last the time of arrival has now turned into a time of departure ...

History in three sentence

First explored by the Spaniards in the 16th century and then settled by the English in the mid-17th century, Suriname became a Dutch colony in 1667.

With the abolition of slavery in 1863, workers were brought in from India and Java. Independence from the Netherlands was granted in 1975.

In 1990, the military overthrew the civilian leadership, but a democratically elected government - a four-party New Front coalition - returned to power in 1991 and has ruled since, expanding to eight parties in 2005.
